Ron Schmidtling webinar

Postby ccpike » Fri Jun 16, 2017 6:23 pm

Here are some notes from Ron's webinar on March 22 2017.
• Average annual temperature (of the seed source) consistently correlated with tree growth across species (not just southern pines).
o In southern latitudes (relative to the geographic range loblolly pine), the effect was linear: seed sources from warmer climates grew faster than sources from cooler climates.
o In mid to northern latitudes, the relationship was curvilinear: seed sources originating from a site more than 5° F warmer of the planting site were subject to growth reductions from insufficient cold tolerance.
• A seed source should be transferred from a location that is 5-10° F warmer than the planting site, or roughly 110 miles
• Rainfall is a limiting factor for east-west transfers.
